Nishkam: Celebration of the Sannyas-list death!
Sannyas-list, the e-mail list of Osho sannyasins at Yahoo!Groups was closed 23 June 2004. It existed many years, changed several forms and technical platforms. It brought the space for sharing, communication, but also ego-fights and frustrations.
How does such list work? Easy: you write an email and send it to the special list address. Every list member including yourself gets the message. It means you need to be subscribed for the list as a member first.
There were more then 360 members of the sannyas-list@yahoogroups.com 23 June 2004. I remember my first exciting with the list in 1997. I guess it used to be an usenet list that time. Suddenly I could communicate with sannyasins from the whole world! After couple of years I found the sannyas-list at onelist.com. The onelist.com was sold to egroups.com, which was sold to yahoo.com. Sannyas-list survived all these pre-registrations and movings.
Mitra, the owner of the list, wrote 16 June: "I don't see it as a place of love any more, and over the last few years has come to reflect less and less my understanding of Osho's message, to the extent where I no longer feel welcome there myself." Looking back he wrote also "In those early years it cost me a fair bit of money, time and favors to keep it alive". I can imagine what does it mean. I jumped on the same track somehow with our rebelliousspirit.com project and know these feelings. By the way, read interview with Mitra, which he gave us a couple of years ago. Mitra is still an owner of sannyas-tech and sannyas-announce lists.
The sannyas-list had several moderators, people who took care about the list. The fact of moderation was one of the reasons for several conflicts. You probably know these neverending discussions about freedom of speach, protection the space, abusing, rules, breaking rules, censorship etc. etc... They happen everywhere on the internet. Some people was thrown out of the list, some of them were under moderation (not allowed to write and send messages). It does not mean that atmosphere was strict, not at all. It maybe interesting to know, that there is another list sannyas-en at yahoogroups.com, which is described as "A gentle space to share Osho". It was created as a result of separation from sannyas-list. When I speak with people about internet sannyas communication, I can often hear about 'mindfuck', 'nonsense' and 'blah blah'. It seems to be impossible for me to read 100 emails from the list daily. If you spend 1 or 2 minutes with 1 message it is about 2 hours. If you want to participate, write and reply it is a full time job! I can't believe Sarlo and Sadananda did the moderation job for free. :) Yahoo!Groups allows you to get digests with 25 messages in one. What a relief! The last number of my digest from sannyas-list is 3014! But there are also reasons why am I still involved in that and love to read that Digests and see old virtual friends like Sadananda, Mitra, Sarlo, Tatina, Tarika, n0by, sakal, Satrakshita, Jalal, Nishta (she is the only one whom I know in real) and others. Is it an addiction? :)
Today's sannyas-list description
This was the original online forum for Osho's lovers and friends. Its now gone away and been replaced by a number of different lists each with their own flavor.
sannyas-announce: A moderated list for brief announcements of events and activities world-wide. groups.yahoo.com/group/sannyas-announce
Living Osho: A group for lovers of Osho who have matured enough to take some responsibility for their lives, acknowledging that as the indispensible flip side of freedom. It is a moderated group, but mainly for the purpose of keeping out people who cannot take responsibility. groups.yahoo.com/group/LivingOsho
New Sannyas List: This forum for disciples and friends of Osho is sometimes a cafe, sometimes a temple and sometimes a debating club. All who are interested in experiencing Meditation and Osho are welcome. groups.yahoo.com/group/sannyas-list-new
