Nishkam: Censoring the message board.

Something is happenning with our message board. It seems to be misused by people who are angry with the situation in Pune Meditation Resort. Devakrishna is also angry. He is 'thinking to remove this site' from his website...

So, what to do with it? As a webmaster of the rebelliousspirit.com I would like to share with you my thoughts and feelings about the situation.

First of all, there is not only message board (MB) at the RebelliousSpirit.com. In fact it is the least important part. But on the other side MB is the place where people can easily learn how to interact and how to participate in the virtual community here. To enter Osho events into the database is a more complicated task. To send an article for the webzine needs also a little effort. But to write an announcement is very easy. This means it can also be easily misused.

Responsibility of authors. I like to see the rebelliousspirit.com as a place for sharing and communication for sannyasins. I do not want to take responsibility for messages from their authors. Every author is responsible for his/her announcement and comment. My wish is to let the place working properly and to make a technical support, not to interfere much into discussions. Yes, we need some good disclaimer. :-)

Another thing is how we react on the show. I loved the message from Phil: 'there is too much paranoia here. Get away from tvs and computers for a while'. When I read it 'YES, thank you' sounded inside of me. I think we can grow exactly with such lovely approach. Love is the answer. If we start fight, we can expect only another political fight here. Sometimes I laughed reading MB. Why to be angry or disguested? This is a real world and these people are real sannyasins, as we are. Don't you like to see them? Don't you like to see some troubles around Osho sannyas world? OK, I also don't like it, but it does not mean I have to fight with it. This is real.

I have several reasons why not to interfere and not to censor the board:

  • I don't like censoring. It is a hard job for me and I don't really know how to do it.
  • garbage at the MB stimulates buying commercial advertisement (if you want your announcement to be visible then buy the good place for it)
  • censoring can scare our other visitors to write. I love internet as a free space for sharing and communication.

What next?
Yes, something has to be done. I have several ideas:

  • to enter payments for announcements. This I hope will be done a little later,
  • to make it even more free,
  • to close the site

The 2nd possibility seems to be the best for me. So, here is my idea:
1. IP addresses of authors will be shown at every message for their easier identification.
2. everybody can censor the message board. It means everybody will be able to delete any message there. Messages will not be deleted completely, but moved into the 'compost heap'. Then everyone, who is interested in garbage can enjoy digging the 'compost heap'. I hope all censors will enjoy this new RebelliousSpirit game. :-)

What do you think?
I will be happy to hear some other suggestions.

P.S. To Devakrishna personally: it made me a little sad because I feel we are on the same boat somehow. I love your otoons.com. If you want to remove the links to RebSpirit, feel free to do it. This is up to you. Anyway I am not going to remove links to otoons.de here or at the Czech Osho website. :-).

Love. Nishkam.
