A Place in the Sun

Wrote by Vandan, email: premvandan@yahoo.com.au, 28 Dec 2008, Sunday, 10:16 GMT

This is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a while now: a retirement community for sannyasins and fellow travelers.
As my generation ages (I’m 63, turning 64 in 2009), I know many of us are starting to wonder about where to spend our days.
I’ve seen many retirement villages and retirement homes around the world, and somehow it feels like a good idea to think about the possibility of living with a bunch of people with whom I’ve felt comfortable for a long time.
To be clear, I’m not talking about a place to go and die, I’m talking about a place to go and LIVE.
I’m also thinking about somewhere beautiful. And, while I love India (largely because of Osho and my experiences with sannyas), India obviously isn’t a healthy place. No, at the moment I’m thinking Bali. There are many reasons for this. It’s beautiful, it’s basically a very spiritual place; the people are very special; the great weather; and it’s relatively inexpensive.
So I’m floating this idea. If I can get enough positive feed-back I’m happy to do as much research as possible. What I’d love is for people to contact me and tell me whether they think it’s a good idea or not. Also how they think it might look and what they’d like to see there. Or, if you have nothing to say at the moment, just send me your email address and I’ll let you know what’s happening (in an informal way – this is not a business). And, because I’d like to hear from as many people as possible, maybe you could send it to your sannyas friends around the world (not as a chain letter) and ask their opinion.
For my part I would like to see a focus on Osho, but without dogma or doctrine. I personally would like it to be old-style Poona – but with as few trips as possible. To be clear, although I’d personally like to see a place which is imbued with Osho’s spirit, I’m not talking about an ashram or even a centre
I think we could even buy an existing hotel and convert it to residential use. I love the idea of a pool and beautiful gardens (also growing our own veggies, etc). We could share some facilities like maybe food, internet, transport, etc, etc. I think there should be a small clinic
There might be additional possibilities like being able to let residences if people are away. There might be a restaurant open to the public. An arts centre, a small gym, etc, etc.
I even love the idea of interacting with and trying to assist the local community. I’m not sure how. Maybe through microfinance, maybe some other way.
I’m totally open to ideas. What d’you think?
With love,
Vandan (Sw. Prem)
